Taking the Belgian State and Brussels Police to court

Next week will be the first day of the trial of the Belgian government and the Brussels police, brought by myself and four others preemptively arrested on 29 September 2010, before and during the major European trade union demonstration in Brussels. That day, about 300 people were arrested, present at this demonstration or on their way to it, just because the police found they looked “alternative”.

I was on the way to the demonstration of the No Border Camp at the Tour & Taxis site, along with a group of clowns from the Rebel Clown Army. I joined them, even though I was not dressed as a clown, because there were already reports circulating of arrests on the way to the demonstration, I thought I would be safer in a group. On the platform of subway station Ribaucourt we were surrounded by police, when asked why they answered only “for your own safety.”

The police closed the metro station, apparently because they were afraid their actions could provoke reactions from onlookers in what I overheard some of them call a “problematic neighbourhood”. We were handcuffed with plastic straps and put in a row, our legs spread. On my question why, I was snarled at if I didn’t have anything better to do than to waste police’s time by demonstrating. Followed by comments about my hair and how it stank and I surely never washed it.

In a police bus, we were taken to the police barracks in Etterbeek, where we are put in a large holding cell. There we were anything but alone, these and other cells are overcrowded with people arrested at or on their way to the demonstration, sometimes very harshly. Apparently, the entire block of the demonstration that was billed as being part of the No Border camp was separated from the rest of the rally by plainclothes agents, using batons and pepper spray.

The rest of the day we spend in this cell, and after being administratively processed in other cells. Until around midnight, when the demonstration had already been disbanded for many hours, when we were first required to be photographed and then in a police bus dropped back near Tour & Taxis.

Only in the weeks afterwards it dawned on me that both the police chief and interior minister thought all of this was completely justifiable. Testimonies in the media about physical and mental violence, for instance by Marianne Maeckelbergh, were met by police with the threat of a libel suit. That there were many witnesses, photographs and video seemed of no importance.

That the police can terrorize people on such a large scale, that this appears to be a planned action against the No Border Camp and anyone who the police deemed part of it. That Interior Minister Annemie Turtelboom’s answer to a parliamentary question about the police action was that it was “necessary, proportionate and effective.” All these things leave me with no other conclusion than that I live in a police state.

Hence my personal reason to join the lawsuit against the Belgian State and the Brussels police. A legal road that start only now, four years after the facts and will probably drag on for several years, if necessary, to the European level.

No Border Trial – Call To Gathering

Wednesday, October 22, 2014
Place Poelaert – Poelaertplein, Brussels 8.15 am

Video of arrestations on 29 September 2010:

Between September 26 and October 1, 2010 Brussels hosted several demonstrations as well as a NoBorder Camp on the theme of freedom of movement.
During this period some 450 so-called preventive arrests were made by the police. Just for the 29 September 2010 on the occasion of a European trade union demonstration, about 300 people were arrested. The police targets were anyone suspected to be taking part in the NoBorder Camp. A huge police deployment spread over the town and without valid reason, people were controlled, searched and administratively detained. No trouble or offense other than the fact of being there and being dressed suspiciously could be held against them. The arrests were almost systematically along with harassment, humiliations and even physical and mental abuse.

Five victims, arrested for their ideas, have decided to introduce civil proceedings at the trial Court of Brussels against the Belgian State as well as the Brussels-Ixelles Police Zone for arbitrary preventive arrests.

The right to protest is guaranteed by the Constitution and the use of intimidation and arrests against peaceful demonstrators is reminiscent of police state methods.

Let’s be many to show our solidarity with the five victims who represents all the others at the first hearing that wil be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Palais de Justice in Brussels.

Where are we now with the federated social web?

Where are we now with the open source, federated social web? There is diaspora* which has a bit of momentum now, but which lacks in functionality for those looking for a FB replacement. There is Identi.ca, which according to me has lost functionality and usability since moving from StatusNet to pump.io. There is Red Matrix, which has a lot of functionality, is interoperable with diaspora* and Friendica, but which is a usability nightmare. And there is Movim, which looks quite sleek, has more functionality then diaspora*, but communicates using XMPP, which makes it impossible to connect to diaspora* or Red, whereas XMPP/Jabber is (still) mainly used for basic chat functionality. I would hope that there was a way to pull this all together and make one nice platform, or even a couple of platforms but in such a way that they can communicate. Still, feels like we are getting somewhere.

Watching “Miners Shot Down”

Watching Miners Shot Down and it’s giving me goosebumps. After spending 7 months in South Africa I feel I’ve only scratched at the surface, only started to understand this country in all it’s complexity. It is not black and white, it is much more intricate than that. The role of Cyril Ramaphosa in the Marikana story is but one example of this. It is strange to notice how much I feel for South Africa and hope the people can overcome the great challenges of inequality, poverty, violence, corruption. Even in this documentary about one of the darkest and saddest episodes in South Africa’s recent history, somehow I see glimpses of hope that South Africans can overcome these problems.

Discordianism and conspiracy theories

In his follow-up to the Illuminatus! trilogy, The Illuminati Papers, Robert Anton Wilson contemplates:

My crystal ball, however, seems to have been cloudy on the subject of Intelligence Increase. Despite all the people using the “smart drugs” mentioned above, the majority, at least in the U.S., has grown steadily stupider. I attribute this to a deliberate policy of “dumbing down” the population, instigated by our ruling Elite after the donnybrooks and katsenjammerei of the ’60s taught them that too many educated people represented a real danger to the status quo.

It is interesting to see a notable number of people, at least on the Internet, believe “conspiracy theories so insane that nobody would ever believe uncritically in conspiracies again.”

Conspiracy theories linking the Illuminati secret society to presidents of the United States and financial elites, plotting to create a New World Order. Wilson did not invent the Illuminati, the Bavarian order of the Illuminati was a 18th century secret society of advocates of free thought, secularism, liberalism, republicanism and gender equality. although there is no evidence they survived prosecution after 1785, conspiracy theories around them have existed ever since. Wilson used them to tie together a bunch of conspiracy theories in his Illuminatus! books, the first of which “The Eye in the Pyramid,” ties the mystical Egyptian Eye of Horus symbol to the Illuminati.

If you haven’t heard of Discordianism, it’s supposedly a satiric religion, although any discordian you ask might (or might not) tell you it’s all real:

In theory, Discordians are devoted to Eris, the Greek goddess of chaos. In practice, they’re devoted to a worldview that mixes anarchistic politics, a general disdain for dogma, and an interest in the illusions that emerge when the mind tries to find order in a disorderly world. They are especially intrigued by the mind’s capacity to imagine vast conspiracies, which helps explain their fascination with the Illuminati.

In the late 1960s, Discordians launched a project dubbed Operation Mindfuck. Robert Anton Wilson:

I saw Discordianism as the Cosmic Giggle Factor, introducing so many alternative paranoias that everybody could pick a favorite, if they were inclined that way. I also hoped that some less gullible souls, overwhelmed by this embarrassment of riches, might see through the whole paranoia game and decide to mutate to a wider, funnier, more hopeful reality-map.

As part of Operation Mindfuck, they sent a letter on Bavarian Illuminati stationary to Robert Welch, saying they (the Illuminati) had “96.5% of the entire world now under [their] collective thumb”. Welch was the founder of the John Birch Society, a conservative group who focused on communist conspiracies but also believed the Illuminati conspiracy.

They took over the leftist Chicago paper rogerSPARK and filled with anarchist politics and surrealist satire and put in ads like this one: “paranoids unite; you have nothing to fear but each other! Send for the informative booklet ‘How to Start Your Own Conspiracy’. Free from the Office of the District Attorney, New Orleans.” They even accused the Chicago mayor of being part of the conspiracy with the front-page headline ‘DALEY LINKED WITH ILLUMINATI’. A letter from a reader, actually written by Wilson, in Playboy Advisor column asked if was true that “Illuminati have existed throughout history, own the international banking cartels, have all been 32nd-degree Masons and were known to Ian Fleming, who portrayed them as SPECTRE in his James Bond books—for which the Illuminati did away with Mr. Fleming” and linked them to the John Kennedy assassination. Operation Mindfuck took off and “New exposés of the Illuminati began to appear everywhere, in journals ranging from the extreme Right to the ultra-Left. Some of this was definitely not coming from us Discordians.” according to Wilson.

In 1969 Wilson and another Playboy editor, Robert Shea, began to write what would become the Illuminatus! trilogy, a novel “perched midway between satire and melodrama, and delicately balancing between ‘proving’ the case for multiple conspiracies and undermining the ‘proof.'” Or as Amazon describes it: “Filled with sex and violence–in and out of time and space–the three books of The Illuminatus are only partly works of the imagination. They tackle all the coverups of our time–from who really shot the Kennedys to why there’s a pyramid on a one-dollar bill.”

I am unsure whether it is amusing or disturbing to see how many people nowadays actually seem to believe the Illuminati conspiracy and see the pyramid showing up in rap video clips as proof that they are part of the secret society.

The gentrification of Woodstock

As a European who lived in Woodstock and wrote with so much praise about it, I guess I am also part of the gentrification process. I don’t have the money to buy a house there, not even with my Euro’s, but I’ll probably still be able to afford rent, unlike families who have lived there for generations and are thrown out because they cannot pay the higher rents and are forced to live in Blikkiesdorp or other settlements. Or how gentrification is extra harsh in South Africa, compared to in Europe
