Save the Handelsbeurs in Antwerp

The city of Antwerp, Belgium, is demolishing one of its most emblematic monuments, the historic Handelsbeurs, or the world’s very first stock exchange, without any obstruction. Just another example of how this city is beaming itself back to Dark Ages.

The Antwerp Exchange is the second version of the original old Exchange, founded in 1531 and rebuild after the fire in 1858. Closed since many years, it was rescheduled for renovations and bought by a Dutch firm but since then nothing happened and absolute deterioration of ‘The Mother of all Exchanges’ stept in. A collective failure of legislation, local governments and the new owners is bringing one of Antwerp’s most important economic heritage sites closer to being a ruin. 1. hard to believe. Maybe the Chinese will have to save it if the Belgian people can’t.

  2. It’s nice to see that finally someone to this treasure takes care! Great that even private persons to preserve this building engage!
